lucrayzor The memories just came flooding back. All the familiar Duet-isms are present and accounted for, with an assortment of gorgeous new takes on the formula. On top of all that, I can't possibly resist some chill bouncy house vibes! Favorite track: Got You Babe.

furrybeans Earlier, I wrote a good bit about how much I liked the song I got from the pre-order (Whole New World). That song was good; extremely good. But the rest of the album is somehow even better. Knew You Were Waiting is a slice of urban heaven, angelic and grounded at once, Islands is funky, complex, and as chill as an ice cube, and Love Lift Us Up is one of those rare songs that you sink into so deeply that you never want to leave. And of course, I'm a sucker for all those little Duet samples. Favorite track: Knew You Were Waiting.

about

"Sometimes the universe sends you a message?  I've been trapped in quite a low mood recently, unfortunately, and it can feel sometimes that nearly everyone around me is feeling lonely too, a little lost, a bit out of it.  When I sat down to make music (after a bit of a break) I simply assumed that it would come out all moody and sad.

But instead - this song happened?  It feels light as air, warm, full of joy and a sense of play, and it does feel like it has come from outside of me, and I am grateful for that!  I'm welcoming it in, hoping it signals a change in the weather or at least reminds me of the potential for that change.  I'm really excited today to offer it out into the world as an invitation to at least believe in the possibility of an upward swing, if not actually get on the swing and start flying." - Tim

Naarm/Melbourne electronic producer Tim Shiel returns with "Whole New World", a vivid, light-as-air instrumental that hums with the optimism and curiosity of spring.

It embodies all the hallmarks of Tim Shiel’s intuitive production style: rich cascading melodies, shimmering textures, floating ambiences, and a driving breakbeat. From wisps of sampled choirs to statuesque strings, from 808 handclap slaps to dubbed desk effects, all parts combine in playful precision into a sonic salad of kitchen-sink psychedelia.

Wherever you are, the change of season provides an open invitation to take a fresh look at the present, and get a fresh read on the future. "Whole New World" arrives just in time, as the sun begins to peek out in the deep end of the southern hemisphere, while the dust settles on summer on the other side of the world.

The quiet MVP here is River Boy, aka Trawlwoolway multi-instrumentalist Narayana Johnson, who floats in with a cosmic cameo on wooden Bansuri flutes he brought home from Varanasi in India. “I have a few friends who play flute which inspired me to get my own,” says River Boy, who is known to many as the composer for recent indie game hit Cult of the Lamb. “I’m very rookie but when played at a high level nothing really beats Bansuri flute imo. I was just jamming and vibing - Tim killed it on the edit!" River Boy's flute plays call and response with a spritely string melody that is sampled from Canadian collaborative pop duo Blue Hawaii, via their "Very Emotional Sounds" sample pack.

Whole New World is the first taste of forthcoming EP Duet x, which sees Tim Shiel returning to the world of cult indie video game Duet ten years since its initial release. To celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary, a new update will feature new levels, a surprising new gameplay feature, and new music from the game’s original composer Tim Shiel. Duet is a commercial and critical Australian video game success story, reaching over 25 million downloads worldwide and winning awards and high praise from The New Yorker, Kotaku, Apple’s App Store and many more.

Tim Shiel is a musician, producer & broadcaster whose unique artistic CV rightfully earns him the title of musical polymath. His intuitive and open-hearted approach to music has led him to collaborate with some of Australia's most compelling musicians including Mindy Meng Wang 王萌, Genesis Owusu, Luke Howard, Komang and many more. He has performed on stage with everyone from orchestras to pop stars, including a long stint as Gotye’s right-hand-person during his Making Mirrors world tour, performing at massive venues worldwide. He is also the composer for critically acclaimed indie video games Duet and The Gardens Between. A longtime champion of underrepresented and creative music, he has in recent years become a familiar fixture in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australians via his role as afternoons host at Double J radio since 2018.
